First Grade Sight Words
By the end of first grade, students should be able to read all 100 of the following sight words automatically. These words are frequently used words, many of which are words that cannot be "sounded out" because of spellings that do not match the sounds. We work on this in class and I encourage you to work on them at home as well.
Flashcards are a good way to learn these words. You can write them on index cards.
A good rule is to practice only 10 words at a time. 7 words should be words easily read by the student. 3 can be new words.
If your child struggles with a particular word, remove the other unknown words and simply focus on one new word at a time.
