Welcome!

Let me tell you a little about myself...

 Alps!

I have been teaching for ten years, enjoying every moment! This year I teach fifth grade students, and am one of the people responsible for our Instructional Consultation Team (ICT) support system. I get to work with kids and with teachers - my favorite combination!

I went to Central Michigan University for my undergraduate work, graduating in 2001 with a degree in Special Education.  From that institution I received endorsements in cognitive impairments and early childhood education.  I received certification to teach general education classes preK-8, and special education preK-12.  I finished my graduate degree from Western Michigan University in 2006, adding an endorsement in learning disabilities and certification as a Master Teacher.  I am now pursuing a Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Health Sciences with a Special Education focus at WMU.

In addition to my teaching at Mattawan Later Elementary, I also teach an introductory special education class at Western Michigan University.

I have particular interests in reading instruction and the development of processes that assist the RtI (Response to Intervention) movement.  I am involved in the following:

  • technology committee

  • mentoring/supervising intern teachers

  • special education committee

  • co-teaching

  • book study groups

I also enjoy many activities outside of my teaching career.  I love kayaking, rock climbing, bicycling, and reading great novels.  I love to travel, and have plans to head to Iceland soon! Students know my love for animals, particularly rabbits and, if you can believe it, snakes and goldfish.
