Curriculum and Instruction
Mattawan High School has been working toward becoming a Professional Learning Community (PLC). This educational best practice focuses on clarifying what students must learn and ensuring they do so at high levels, maintaining a belief that educators must work collaboratively and take collective responsibility for the success of all students while utilizing evidence of student learning in order to respond to student needs.
Our PLC work is guided by four essential questions:
- What do we expect our students to learn?
- How will we know when they have learned it?
- How will we respond when some students do not learn?
- How will we respond when some students have demonstrated proficiency?
To answer the question of “what we expect students to learn,” teachers have worked together to define the essential standards for each content area. These essential standards are the skills and content that students are expected to master prior to moving to the next course in sequence and what drives our Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) work.
MTSS is a prevention-based framework that focuses on instruction that provides support to students who have not mastered the essential standards. If needed, interventions are put into place to support the student. These interventions occur on a daily basis during a 25 minute seminar and are taught by the content area teacher.
