Jon-Miguel Porn Memorial PALS Scholarship and Program Fund

This scholarship will pay tribute to the memory of Jon-Miguel Porn, a Mattawan High School graduate who died tragically in an auto accident in the summer of 2015. Jon-Miguel, a genuine and sincere student, supported the Peer Assistant Leader (PALS) Program during his years at MHS. Jon-Miguel’s family noted that he was helped by the PALS Program, and his friends were helped after his death.

The recipient of this annual $1,000 scholarship will be a graduating Peer Assistant Leader (PAL) who will be recognized for his or her efforts to reach out, help and support students as they transition through their high school experiences. The PAL selected for this scholarship demonstrates kindness and compassion, as well as a caring commitment to the service of others. This individual is a trained helper who provides peer support “under the radar” in a confidential manner and who facilitates services for students in crisis situations. This peer helper is non-judgmental and respects the values and beliefs of others. As a leader in the school community, this PAL is respected by adults and peers alike. In addition, this student demonstrates personal growth in the role of a peer helper and contributes to the growth of the Mattawan High School PALS Program.
