Band

6th Grade Band

The Sixth Grade Band is a class that meets five days a week.  The prelude to the class is a music aptitude survey that is given during the spring of their fifth grade.  This survey determines if the student can discern between pitch, rhythm, and chords.  This survey helps direct the student in choosing the best instrument for which they may be suited.  Upon starting the sixth grade, the students are asked to have two or three instruments in mind that they would like to play.  The students are then fitted to the instrument that best physically fits the physical characteristics of their facial mask.  We ask that any student wishing to play in the percussion section have a good background in piano skills.  The Band itself is split into instrument classes that meet during the sixth and seventh hour periods.  The Band performs three concerts during the school year.  They play a holiday concert in December, a winter concert in February, and a spring concert in April.

7th Grade Band

Students enter this class after completing the sixth-grade year of Beginning Band.  The 7th Grade Band meets in two separate hours by woodwind and brass/percussion groupings.  The band performs at the holiday concert in December, the winter concert in February, District XI M.S.B.O.A. festival in March, the spring concert in April, and the spring presentation for the fifth-grade in early May.  Students also have the option and are encouraged to perform at the District XI M.S.B.O.A., a Solo and Ensemble Festival in April.  Parents are invited to attend any or all of these events.

8th Grade Band

Eighth Grade Band meets daily and is comprised of students that have completed 6th and 7th-grade band at Mattawan, or have transferred from other schools.  Upon arrival at Mattawan Middle School, transfer students are asked to audition for the directors.  They are asked to prepare a solo or etude and show a basic knowledge of major scales and sight-reading.  The band performs at the holiday concert in December, the winter concert in February, District XI M.S.B.O.A. festival in March, the spring concert in April, and the spring presentation for the fifth grade in early May.  Students also have the option and are encouraged to perform at the District XI M.S.B.O.A., a solo and ensemble Festival in April.  Mattawan band students have participated in the District XI, and state festivals for the past 30 years.  The 8th-grade students also participate yearly in the annual Mattawan Middle School Walk-A-Thon, MHS Homecoming, and the Mattawan Memorial Day Parade.  This is their first experience marching, and is preparation for their entry next year in the High School Marching Band.  Parents are invited to attend any or all of these events, and we invite you to come to the Middle School Band room to see the fine tradition set by this band with over twenty years of recognition plaques displayed with Mattawan Pride.
